Once upon a time UN posts were respected and protected

If this was on purpose Israel must surely loose all international support in the current conflict; if it was not on purpose then the incompetence of the Israeli military targetting should be cause for worry, especially given all these 'precision strikes' they carry out.

There's been a lot of talk about proportionality in international law over the last few days - the best discussion is on Opinio Juris here, here and here.

Not to excuse in any way the belligerence of the current IDF command or the incompetence of the pilot who dropped the bomb but...

When *was* that time when UN posts were respected?

When the Irish were ambushed at Niemba in Congo in 1960?
When UNIFIL were made sport of during the SLA period?
When the current commander of Canadian Land Forces had to jump aside to avoid Serb tanks or when the Dutch capitulated at Srebrenica?

Those are the ones I can just think of off the top of my head.

Sadly Fi the respect of UN posts has been far noticeable in the breach rather than the observance.

Yes, but Israel (we are constantly assured) Is The Only Democracy In The Region.
